Róbert Petrovický (born October 26, 1973 in Košice , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Slovak ice hockey player and today's coach. In his long career, he has played 210 games for the Hartford Whalers , St. Louis Blues , Tampa Bay Lightning and Dallas Stars in the National Hockey League . His brother Ronald is also a hockey player.
Career
Róbert Petrovický began his career as a junior player with Dukla Trenčín , for whom he made his debut in the Czechoslovak first division in the 1991/92 season . In 1991 Žigmund Pálffy moved to Trenčín and together with Branislav Jánoš and Róbert Petrovický he formed a very dangerous trio. In the 1992 NHL Entry Draft , Róbert Petrovický was selected ninth in the first round by the Hartford Whalers .
From 1992 Petrovický then played with varying success in the NHL for the Whalers, so that he was often used in the AHL with the Springfield Indians . In November 1995 he was given to the Dallas Stars in exchange for Dan Kesa , where he was again mainly used in the farm teams . In the 1996/97 season he completed a total of 46 missions for the St. Louis Blues in the NHL, but played in the following season only for their farm team, the Worcester IceCats .
His next stop in the NHL was the Tampa Bay Lightning , for which he played 71 NHL games in two seasons. In the summer of 2000, he joined the New York Islanders as a free agent . He played eleven NHL games for the Islanders and 23 games for their farm team in Chicago , but moved to the Swedish Elitserien at MoDo Hockey Örnsköldsvik at the end of the season . From 2001 he went on the ice in the National League A for HC Ambrì-Piotta , SCL Tigers and ZSC Lions . In the 2004/05 season he was Swiss runner-up with the ZSC Lions, who lost the playoff final 4-1 against HC Davos .
He started the 2007/08 season at HC Vítkovice Steel , before moving to Leksands IF in the second Swedish division, HockeyAllsvenskan , after eleven games in the Czech Republic . With Leksand he failed in the Kvalserien in 2008 on promotion to the Elitserien and then returned to HC Vitkovic. At the end of the 2008/09 season he moved again to Leksands IF, with which he failed again in the Kvalserien.
At the end of September 2009 he returned to his hometown club Dukla Trenčín before he signed a contract in the Continental Hockey League with Dinamo Riga on October 19, 2009 . For the Latvians he scored eight goals in a total of 43 games and provided another 16 templates. After a Slovak club was accepted into the KHL for the first time in the 2010/11 season with HC Lev Poprad , he signed with the KHL newcomer. Since this did not take up the game, Petrovický was initially without a club. In October 2010 he got a contract with Kalevan Pallo (KalPa) from the Finnish SM-liiga , which he left in mid-December 2010 and was again committed by Dinamo Riga. After the 2010/11 season he left Dinamo and was initially without a club. In October 2011 he received a contract with HC Kometa Brno , where he played until 2013 and was runner-up in 2012. Between 2013 and 2016 he was under contract with his hometown club before ending his career in 2016.
International
Róbert Petrovický has participated in all major international championships in the course of his career. As early as 1992, he took part in the U20 World Cup with the Czechoslovak U20 team, scoring three goals and six assists in seven games . With the Slovak national team he won the gold medal at the 2002 World Cup . Other highlights of his career were his participation in the 1994 Winter Olympics in Albertville , 1998 in Nagano and 2002 in Salt Lake City .
