HC Vítkovice Ridera is a Czech ice hockey club from Ostrava , which belongs to the top division of the Czech Republic, the Extraliga .
history
In 1928 an ice hockey club was founded in the Moravian Ostrava district of Vítkovice . SSK Vítkovice achieved their first notable success in 1934 when they won the Moravian and Slovak championships. In 1936 the club was a founding member of the top Czechoslovak league. The first season Vítkovice finished fifth and had the honor of playing the first game of the new league. The first descent followed in 1943, already as ČSK Vítkovice, and the ascent succeeded in 1949 under the name ZSJ Vítkovické železárny. After two second places, the team won the Czechoslovak championship in 1952. After a few seasons in midfield, the team rose from the top division in 1960. The ascent followed immediately, but the next descent after only four years. It was not until 1973 that Vítkovice returned to the first division . After some placements in mid-table, Vítkovice succeeded in 1981 for the second time in the club's history to become Czechoslovak ice hockey champions . After the main players had left the club, Vítkovice rose in 1985. They returned to the top division in 1988. In the mid-1990s, HC Vítkovice was at the top of the Czech Extraliga, in 1997 the team was runner-up and in 1998 third. This season they also set the top scorer in the league with David Moravec . In the 1999/2000 game year, the team saved themselves from relegation against the winner of the first division Dukla Jihlava from relegation. In the years that followed, the team was mostly able to place itself at the top of the final table.

HC Vítkovice Steel plays its home games in the Ostravar Aréna in the Zábřeh district , which has 10,157 seats. This is the former culture and sports palace, which has served as a multifunctional arena since it was built in 1986. It was completely renovated for the 2004 Ice Hockey World Championship and renamed ČEZ Aréna. The owner is the joint stock company VÍTKOVICE ARÉNA, as, the majority shareholder of which is the city of Ostrava .
