František Černík (born June 3, 1953 in Nový Jičín , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech ice hockey player who played for many years in the Czechoslovakian extra league for TJ Vítkovice and the Czechoslovak national team as a striker . Today he is President of HC Vítkovice Steel and Vice President of the Czech Ice Hockey Federation .

Career as a player

František Černík began his career in the youth teams of HC Banik Ostrava , before moving to the junior team of TJ Vítkovice in 1969. In 1973 he returned to his hometown club before playing for ASD Dukla Jihlava during his two-year military service . He then returned to Vítkovice and remained loyal to this club until 1984. During his time in the top division of Czechoslovakia, he completed a total of 404 league games, scoring 185 goals and 173 assists. In 1981 he won the Czechoslovak Championship with the TJ Vítkovice . At the end of his career in 1984, Černík received permission to move to a western country.

After he was signed by the Detroit Red Wings in July 1983 , he was able to move to the National Hockey League . However, he struggled to get used to the smaller ice surface and the tougher style of play. Together with his compatriot Milan Chalupa , he made his debut with the Red Wings on October 11th, where he managed an assist. In his sixth game against the Montreal Canadiens on November 7th, he scored the first of five NHL goals on pass from Steve Yzerman . After only one season he returned to Europe and played for ESV Kaufbeuren in the 1985/86 season . There he scored 67 scorer points in 40 games.

Further stations in his career were VEU Feldkirch and ATSE Graz . After the season with the best points of his career (64 goals and 40 assists in 30 games), he ended this in 1988.

International

In addition to his success at club level, František Černík also had great success in international championships. With the Czechoslovak men's selection , he won one medal at the Winter Olympics and four medals at world championships . He received his first appointment to the national team for the ice hockey world championship in 1976 (winning the gold medal) and from then on he regularly took part in the world championship. It was only at the end of his career that he was appointed to the squad for the 1984 Winter Olympics and won the silver medal. In the national jersey, he scored 42 goals in 151 international matches for Czechoslovakia.

Career as a functionary

Since his retirement from competitive sports, František Černík has held various positions at HC Vítkovice Steel . In the mid-1990s he was assistant coach to Ladislav Svozil . Today he is president of the association.

Since 1991 he has been a member of the board of the Czech Ice Hockey Federation . Between 1992 and 2002 he looked after the Czech national team as manager and team leader at four Olympic Games and eight World Championships. He won the Olympic gold medal and several gold medals at world championships with the national team in Nagano in 1998. In 2008 Černík ran for the office of President of the Czech Ice Hockey Federation . As part of this candidacy, he tried to bring more transparency into the financial structure of the Extraliga. Since summer 2008 he has been vice-president of the ice hockey association.
