Milan Chalupa (born July 4, 1953 in Oudoleň , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czechoslovak ice hockey player who was under contract with Dukla Jihlava and EHC Freiburg for many years . Today Chalupa works as an ice hockey coach in the Czech extra league and first division .
Career as a player
Milan Chalupa began his career in Jiskra Havlíčkův Brod's junior team in 1966 , although he was only 13 years old at the time. He played for this team until 1972 before coming to Dukla Jihlava via the juniors from TJ Dukla Liberec . He made his debut for Dukla Jihlava in the 1973/74 season in the top division of the ČSSR and remained loyal to this club until 1984. In 1974 , 1982 , 1983 and 1984 he was Czechoslovak champion with this team . In eleven seasons for Jihlava, the defender completed 440 games in which he scored 153 points scorer.
During the 1984 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the third round in 49th place and got permission to move to North America. In Detroit he made his debut on October 11, 1984 together with his compatriot František Černík , but completed only 14 games in the National Hockey League until December 9, due to injuries and later returned to Europe.
Between 1985 and 1990 he played for EHC Freiburg in the second and first Bundesliga before announcing his retirement during the 1990/91 season . Two years later, in the playdowns of the 1992/93 season , he made his comeback at the EHCF. At the beginning of the following season he returned to Dukla Jihlava and completed another twelve games in the Czech Extraliga before he finally resigned. With 47 goals and 168 assists in 259 games for the EHCF, he is still ninth on the EHCF's all-time scorer list. His jersey number # 5 was banned by the club and is no longer given to players.
Career as a coach
Since he retired from competitive sports, Milan Chalupa has been working as an ice hockey coach. He was in charge of HC Moeller Pardubice as assistant coach, HC Znojemští Orli (2000/01) as head coach and Dukla Jihlava in the 2005/06 season.
International
Milan Chalupa represented the Czechoslovak Federation in many international championships, in which he won a total of nine medals. In 1976 and 1977 he became world champion, and he also took part in three Olympic Winter Games and two tournaments for the Canada Cup . In total, he scored 23 goals in 202 international matches.
