Marek Malík (* 24. June 1975 in Ostrava , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech hockey player and current - trainer , who during his playing career from 1992 to 2014 among other 756 games for the Carolina Hurricanes , Vancouver Canucks and New York Rangers in the National Hockey League has contested on the position of defender . In addition, he completed another 267 games for his home club HC Vítkovice in the Czech extra league , with which he was Czech runner-up in 2011. Malík celebrated his greatest career success in the jersey of the Czech national team by winning the bronze medal at the 2006 Winter Olympics .
Career
Marek Malík began his career in his hometown with HC Vítkovice before he was selected in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft by the Hartford Whalers in the third round in 72nd place. He stayed in Vítkovice for a year before moving to North America for the 1994/95 season.
In the following two years he played mostly in the American Hockey League on the farm team, with the Springfield Falcons . After eight NHL games in the first two years, he came to 47 NHL appearances in the 1996/97 season . The following year he moved to Sweden for Malmö IF , but returned to the United States a year later. The Whalers had moved to Carolina and the new partner team in the AHL was Beast of New Haven , but played with the Carolina Hurricanes for most of the season . This time he made the breakthrough. Shortly after the start of the 2002/03 season, he moved with Darren Langdon to the Vancouver Canucks and stayed there for another season. That season he won the NHL Plus / Minus Award with Tampa Bay's Martin St. Louis .
In the strike season 2004/05 Malík returned to his homeland and played for HC Vitkovice. After the lockout, he received a three-year contract with the New York Rangers before the 2005/06 season . Malík stayed with the Rangers until 2008 before signing a one-year contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning in October 2008 . A year later he became an unrestricted free agent and didn't decide to return to the Czech Republic until October 2009. First he played again for his home club in the Extraliga, before he was loaned to Genève-Servette HC from the National League A in November 2009 . At the end of July 2010 he signed a three-year contract extension with HC Vítkovice Steel. At the end of the following season he reached the playoff final with his team, in which they failed with 1: 4 wins at HC Oceláři Třinec .
After the 2013/14 season, which he spent at HC Innsbruck , he ended his career. At the beginning of the 2015/16 season he began to work as a coach in his Czech homeland, including briefly as assistant coach for the first division club HC Oceláři Třinec. Since 2016 he has been working in this position at the second division club HC Frýdek-Místek .
International
Marek Malík took part in 1993 with the Czech U18 selection at the U18 European Junior Championship , where they won the bronze medal. In the following two years he played for the U20 national team and took part in the Junior World Cup in 1994 and 1995 .
For the men's national team of the Czech Republic he took in 2004 at the World Cup of Hockey in part. Two years later he was a member of the Czech Olympic team at the Olympic Winter Games in Turin . He won the bronze medal in the men's selection.
