Jason Zucker (born January 16, 1992 in Newport Beach , California ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League since February 2020 and plays for them in the position of left winger . Before that, he spent almost eight years in the Minnesota Wild organization .
Career
Jason Zucker began his career as a hockey player in the USA Hockey National Team Development Program , for which he was active from 2008 to 2010 in the junior division of the North American Hockey League . He was then selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2010 in the second round as the 59th player of the Minnesota Wild . First, however, he attended the University of Denver from 2010 to 2012 , for whose ice hockey team he played parallel in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association . In 2011 and 2012 he was elected to the second WCHA All-Star Team. In 2011 he was also elected Rookie of the Year at WCHA and its all-rookie team. In 2012 he was accepted into the All-Academic Team of the WCHA and the second All-American Team of the Western Conference of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . Due to his good performance at the university, he received a professional contract with the Minnesota Wild in March 2012, for which he made his debut in the National Hockey League at the end of the 2011/12 season . By the end of the season he prepared two goals in six games for the Wild.
In the season 2016/17 sugar led together with his teammate Ryan Suter the plus / minus member and not of the NHL with +34 (Figs. NHL Plus / Minus Award ; no longer officially awarded). In the following season, the attacker increased his personal statistics significantly to 64 scorer points and thus achieved his best career performance so far, while he was the team's second best goalscorer (33). He then signed a new five-year contract in Minnesota in July 2018 that should earn him an average annual salary of $ 5.5 million.
For his social commitment, Zucker was honored with the King Clancy Memorial Trophy at the end of the 2018/19 season .
After about eight years in Minnesota, sugar was given to the Pittsburgh Penguins in February 2020 . In return, the Wild received Alex Galchenyuk , young defender Calen Addison and a conditional first-round vote for the 2020 NHL Entry Draft . The latter should automatically move a year back if the Penguins miss the playoffs in the 2019/20 season. Ultimately, the Wild received the right to vote for the 2021 draft, as the regulations of the 2020 playoffs , in which the penguins were eliminated in the qualifying round, changed significantly due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
International
For the USA , Zucker took part in the U18 World Championships in 2009 and 2010 and the U20 World Championships in 2010 , 2011 and 2012 . At the U18 World Championships in 2009 and 2010 and the U20 World Championship in 2010, he and his team won the gold medal. At the U20 World Cup in 2011, he won the bronze medal with the USA.
