Kelly Wayne Chase (born October 25, 1967 in Porcupine Plain , Saskatchewan ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player (right winger) who played for the St. Louis Blues , Hartford Whalers and Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League from 1989 to 2000 .

Career

As a junior he played in the Western Hockey League for the Saskatoon Blades . The then already robust player knew not only after he was not drafted that his talent would not bring him into the NHL, but that he could only go this way through zealous effort and toughness. He stayed in the junior division as long as he could and convinced the scouts from St. Louis, if not with 76 points, in any case with 343 penalty minutes.

In 1988 he signed as a free agent with the St. Louis Blues , but played the first year exclusively on the farm team with the Peoria Rivermen in the International Hockey League . He played only 38 games there in his first season, but with 278 penalty minutes he also drew attention there. Hard to imagine that he still had time to score 14 goals.

In the 1989/90 season it came to his first appearances in the NHL. Chase understood that he had been taken there to fight. 244 penalty minutes in 44 games confirm that he did it. He stayed with the Blues until 1994, consistently spending a lot of time in the penalty box without scoring more than two goals in any season.

About the NHL Waiver Draft , the Hartford Whalers got him in January 1995. During his third season in Hartford, the Toronto Maple Leafs signed him , but there he only came to two games. For the 1997/98 season he was back in St. Louis. He played a little more calmly and managed to stay under 200 penalty minutes in his second season as well as to achieve 10 scorer points in the NHL for the first time. A knee injury cost him most of the 1999/2000 season . After the season he announced his resignation and was taken over into the television team of the Blues, where he still works as a commentator today.
