Shjon Podein (born March 5, 1968 in Rochester , Minnesota ) is a former American ice hockey player who played 826 games for the Edmonton Oilers , Philadelphia Flyers , Colorado Avalanche and St. Louis Blues in the course of his active career between 1992 and 2006 in the National Hockey League on the position of the left winger . Podein celebrated his greatest career success in the service of the Colorado Avalanche by winning the Stanley Cup in 2001 . In the same year he received the King Clancy Memorial Trophy , with which he was awarded for his social commitment.
Career
Podein started his career in high school and the University of Minnesota Duluth . Here it came for the Edmonton Oilers in the 1988 NHL Entry Draft in the eighth round as the 166th
In 1990 the Oilers sent him to their farm team with the Cape Breton Oilers in the American Hockey League . In the 1992/93 season he was first used in the NHL and played 40 games there. With Cape Breton he won the Calder Cup . The following year an injury threw him back and only brought it to 28 games, but also represented the US national ice hockey team as in the previous year at the World Cup.
For the 1994/95 season he moved to the Philadelphia Flyers and made his breakthrough in the NHL. He was not a particularly talented player, but he found his role as a penalty killer and a player who was valuable on the ice with a lot of commitment for the team, but also in the team structure. In 1997 he made it to the Stanley Cup Finals with the Flyers . In November 1998 the Colorado Avalanche brought him in for his defensive qualities in exchange for Keith Jones and he did not disappoint. He was a valuable component in the Avalanche team that brought the Stanley Cup to Denver in the 2000/01 season . Away from the ice, Podein was also very well received, as he was very committed to social issues with his Children's Foundation . For this he was awarded the King Clancy Memorial Trophy . He moved to the St. Louis Blues in early 2002 for Mike Keane . Here he played the following season before moving to the Swedish second division for Växjö Lakers HC for just one season . After two years there he ended his career in 2006 after a season with the Nikkō IceBucks in the Asia League Ice Hockey .
