Douglas Daniel "Doug" Weight (born January 21, 1971 in Warren , Michigan ) is a former American ice hockey player and current coach . In the course of his active career, the center was active between 1989 and 2011 for the New York Rangers , Edmonton Oilers , St. Louis Blues , Carolina Hurricanes , Anaheim Ducks and New York Islanders in the National Hockey League . He won the Stanley Cup with the Hurricanes in the 2006 playoffs . He also played for the Starbulls Rosenheim and the Frankfurt Lions in the German Ice Hockey League . He then worked in the NHL as the head coach of the New York Islanders.
Career
Doug Weight graduated from Notre Dame High School. There he was the star in the school team. In his junior years he played for Lake Superior State University in the college league Central Collegiate Hockey Association . In the 1990 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected by the New York Rangers in Round 2 as 34th.
After his second season in Lake Superior, he was allowed to debut in a play-off game for the Rangers. In the following season he commuted between farm team and NHL. A year later he had made the leap into the best league in the world. Before the end of the season he was exchanged for Esa Tikkanen in Edmonton.
For nine years he played for the Edmonton Oilers and developed into one of the best playmakers in the NHL. During Weight's time in Edmonton, the strike in the 1994/95 season also fell . Weight used the delayed start of the season for a trip to Germany and played eight games for the Starbulls Rosenheim . The St. Louis Blues signed him for the 2001/02 season . There he formed one of the most dangerous duos with Keith Tkachuk .
During the lockout in the NHL in the 2004/05 season Weight played again in the DEL, this time he joined the Frankfurt Lions towards the end of the season . At the end of the 2005/06 season he moved from the St. Louis Blues to the Carolina Hurricanes with whom he won the 2006 Stanley Cup . He returned to the St. Louis Blues in July 2006 as a free agent and was transferred to the Anaheim Ducks in December 2007 along with Michal Birner and a seven-round suffrage in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for Andy McDonald . In early July 2008, Weight signed a contract with the New York Islanders . In October 2009 he became the new captain of the Islanders.
On May 26, 2011 Doug Weight announced his retirement after 19 seasons in the National Hockey League.
At the beginning of the 2011/12 season, Weight moved to the Islanders' management team, where he worked as an assistant coach and assistant to General Manager Garth Snow . In January 2017, after Jack Capuano's dismissal, he took over the post of head coach on an interim basis. After the 2016/17 season, the Islanders confirmed Weights' long-term commitment as head coach. As a result, the American only looked after the Isles for a full season, as he and General Manager Garth Snow were fired in June 2018.
