Lorne Henning began his junior career in his home country Saskatchewan with the Estevan Bruins from the Western Canada Hockey League (WCHL), the region's highest junior division. In the 1970/71 season, the center scored 130 points in 66 games and was therefore elected to the Second All-Star Team and awarded the Brad Hornung Trophy as the fairest player in the league. After being with the Bruins for New Westminster was changed, who chose him New York Islanders in the NHL Amateur Draft in 1972 to 17th position.

Apart from a few appearances with the New Haven Nighthawks in the American Hockey League and the Fort Worth Wings in the Central Hockey League , Henning promptly established himself in the National Hockey League (NHL). With the Islanders he took on defensive tasks in the course of the following seasons, for example he was regularly used in the underpowered game . The attacker achieved his best offensive statistic with 33 points from 73 games in the 1978/79 season, before winning the first Stanley Cup in franchise history with the team in the 1980 playoffs . He repeated this success with the Islanders the following year, with the Canadian already temporarily working as an assistant coach and only completing ten games in the entire season. After the season 1980/81 Henning ended his active career, in which he had played a total of 624 games in the NHL and recorded 198 points scorer.

He led the North Stars into the playoffs in his first year, but missed them in his second season and was sacked two games before the end of the regular season. After a brief hiatus, the Canadian returned to the Islanders as an assistant in 1989 and took over the position of head coach there after another five years.
