Melfort ( City of Melfort ) is a small town in Saskatchewan , Canada , the self-titled City of Northern Lights ( "City of the Northern Lights has given").
location
Melfort is about 95 kilometers southeast of Prince Albert . The place was declared the 12th city (City) of Saskatchewan in 1980 after the required resident population of 5,000 had been exceeded a few years earlier.
history
The immediate area was first settled in 1892, the first houses were about 2.4 km south of today's city. The settlement was named Stoney Creek . The later name Melfort comes from the first post office in the region, which was named after the wife of the Indian inspector Reginald Beatty , Mary Melfort Campbell of Melfort , from Argyleshire, Scotland. Reginald Beatty was one of the first settlers in the area around Melfort as early as 1890, a small settlement was also named after him, the place Beatty is about 13 kilometers northwest of Melfort.
economy
Melfort was also one of the first railway stations in the region, which established a trading center that is still active today in what was actually an agricultural area.
Culture and sport
A certain proportion of Melfort's population originally came from Ukrainian immigrants , which is why there is a Ukrainian folklore association, the Melfort and District Ukrainian Dancers , and the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Holy Spirit . The city also has the Melfort and District Museum .
Like everywhere else in Saskatchewan, ice hockey is the most popular sport, and with the Melfort Mustangs , the city has a team in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League .
