The Aubrugg cogeneration plant is a heating plant in the north of Zurich . It can be seen from afar through its 105 meter high chimney, the second tallest structure in Zurich. The power plant is located in the Zurich East motorway triangle.

It was designed by the architect Pierre Zoelly and the engineering office Basler & Hofmann and commissioned by the Canton of Zurich in 1977 . It has two boilers with an output of 80 MW each, which can be fired with oil or gas, and three smaller units with an output of 10 MW each. The oil is delivered by truck, the gas by pipeline.

The power plant covers the peak load in Zurich's district heating network . On October 5, 2010, the wood-fired thermal power station, which was built for around a year, was fired for the first time. The expansion of the thermal power station, which went into operation in 1977, enables the CO 2 -neutral production of 38,000 MWh of electricity and 104,000 MWh of heat per year.

After a corresponding bill was approved by the city of Zurich's electorate, the facility, but not the property, was transferred from the canton to the city on January 1, 2005. In addition to the district heating pipes, which sometimes supply the ETH and the university hospital, there is also a six-kilometer tunnel to the Wässerwiese converter station at the Rämibühl canton school .
