Swift Current is a small town on the Trans-Canada Highway and the Canadian Pacific Railway in southwest Saskatchewan .
etymology
The place Swift Current is named after the creek Swift Current Creek , on which it lies. The name Swift Current derives from kisiskâciwan from, what in the language of the Cree as much as it flows quickly ( english it flows swiftly ) is called. When the first white settlers set foot in the area in the 18th century, they first translated the name of the stream into French as Rivière au Courant , and later into English as Swift Current .
history
The place was founded in 1881 with the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway . The first settlers who arrived in the spring of 1883 initially made their living from the construction of the railway and its outbuildings. There were also ten sheep ranchers with a total of 20,000 sheep. During the Riel Rebellion in 1885, the site was briefly a military base. After the status as at February 4, 1904 village was awarded, followed on 15 March 1907, the status of town and finally on 15 January 1914, the current status of city .
Lyric
The Lyric is Saskatchewan's oldest theater . It was built in Swift Current in 1912 for $ 50,000. There are advertising posters from the 1920s on the north and south sides of the building. Initially, entertainment from the field of vaudeville was performed here, later the house was used as a cinema . A bar and night club were established in the 1980s . In 2005 the theater was purchased by the non-profit Southwest Cultural Development Group in order to maintain it. It is still used for cultural events such as B. Chautauqua in July 2008 or Open Micro Nights.
Sports
Swift Current is the origin of the Swift Current Broncos ice hockey club , which plays in the Western Hockey League . There is also the Swift Current Rampage as a boxing lacrosse club.
The 2010 Women's Curling World Championship was held at Swift Current from March 20-28 .
