Edward Alexander "Ted" Harris (born July 18, 1936 in Winnipeg , Manitoba ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and coach who played 888 games for the Canadiens de Montréal , Minnesota North Stars , during his active career between 1953 and 1975 . Detroit Red Wings , St. Louis Blues and Philadelphia Flyers have played in the National Hockey League on the position of fullback . With the Canadiens and Flyers he won the Stanley Cup five times. As a result of his retirement, he worked between 1975 and 1977 as the head coach for his ex-team Minnesota North Stars.
Career
Harris spent his junior years with the Winnipeg Monarchs in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League , where he played between 1953 and 1956. At the age of 20, the defender then switched to the professional field and was initially active for two years for the Philadelphia Ramblers in the Eastern Hockey League and then one year until 1959 for the Victoria Cougars in the Western Hockey League .
For the 1959/60 season Harris pulled it through a loan deal to the Springfield Indians in the American Hockey League . With the Indians, the Canadian won the Calder Cup just as often in the following three seasons . After the fourth year he left the team and moved within the league to the Cleveland Barons . The reason was that the Indians had transferred him to the Canadiens de Montréal from the National Hockey League and they initially used him at Barons. A total of eleven players were involved in the transfer. At the end of the 1963/64 season he won his fourth Calder Cup with Cleveland. He also received the Eddie Shore Award as the best defensive player in the league and was appointed to the AHL's First All-Star Team . For the following game year he finally made the jump into the NHL squad of the Canadiens, to which he belonged without reservation until the end of the 1969/70 season . In the six-year period, the defender won the Stanley Cup four times with the French Canadians and took part in three NHL All-Star Games . He was also a member of the NHL Second All-Star Team in 1969 .
In June 1970 Harris finally had to leave the Canadiens after he was selected in the Intra-League Draft by the Minnesota North Stars . There, the experienced defensive player was named team captain straight away . He held this post until November 1973, when he was transferred to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for Gary Bergman . During his only 41 games with the Red Wings until mid-February 1974, he also acted temporarily as team captain. Through a six-player transfer business, Harris ended the 1973/74 season with the St. Louis Blues . These then sold it to the Philadelphia Flyers in September 1974 . There Harris spent his last season in the NHL, which he crowned by winning his fifth Stanley Cup. After the 1974/75 season , he ended his active career at the age of 38.
As a result, Harris returned to the Minnesota North Stars, who commit him to the 1975/76 season as head coach. For the next two years he looked after the North Stars with moderate success. After a bad start to the 1977/78 season , the Canadian was dismissed during the season. Another attempt in the season 1978/79 to gain a foothold with the Springfield Indians as head coach also failed with the early release.
