Brian Edward Bellows (born September 1, 1964 in St. Catharines , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 1331 games for the Minnesota North Stars , Canadiens de Montréal , Tampa Bay Lightning , Mighty Ducks of Anaheim and Washington Capitals played in the National Hockey League on the right winger position . Bellows, who was selected as runner-up overall in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft , recorded numerous successes during his time as a professional, including winning the Stanley Cup for the Canadiens de Montréal in 1993 and winning the Canada Cup in 1984 with the Canadian national team .
Career
In his junior days, Bellows played for the Kitchener Rangers in the Ontario Hockey League and led his team to the Memorial Cup victory. The team was also well cast on the defensive with Al MacInnis and Scott Stevens . Here he distinguished himself through his leadership qualities. In the 1982 NHL Entry Draft , the Minnesota North Stars selected him as the second player, just behind Gord Kluzak , ahead of players like Scott Stevens or Dave Andreychuk .
Immediately for the 1982/83 season he was brought into the NHL and the expectations of him were high. The bar for young players was unattainably high at that time thanks to Wayne Gretzky and his start to the season was not particularly successful, but over the course of the season he got used to the new league and was able to convince some of his critics.
In his second season he took on the position of team captain on behalf of the injured Craig Hartsburg , making him one of the youngest captains the NHL had ever seen. In his ten years with the North Stars, he managed to score over 75 points seven times. He was twice the best scorer of his team. Because of his great commitment outside of the ice rink, he was very much appreciated in Minneapolis. Also in the playoffs of the 1990/91 season he was the best scorer of his team and came with the North Stars in the finals for the Stanley Cup , but here they failed because of the Pittsburgh Penguins around Mario Lemieux .
For the 1992/93 season he left Minnesota in exchange for Russ Courtnall to the Montréal Canadiens . There, too, he was among the top scorers. After a weaker 1994/95 season he was given to the Tampa Bay Lightning . Here he did not play as strong as expected in the 1995/96 season and was transferred to the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim shortly after the start of the coming season .
For the 1997/98 season he moved to Germany to the Berlin Capitals but returned to the NHL towards the end of the season in March 1998. His new team were the Washington Capitals . There he also played the 1998/99 season , in which he reached the 1,000-point mark on January 2, 1999 against the Toronto Maple Leafs as the 54th player . After the end of the season he ended his active career.
