William Alfred "Bill" Goldsworthy (born August 24, 1944 in Waterloo , Ontario ; † March 29, 1996 in Minneapolis , Minnesota , USA ) was a Canadian ice hockey player (right winger) and coach who worked for the Boston Bruins from 1964 to 1979 , Minnesota North Stars and New York Rangers played in the National Hockey League as well as the Indianapolis Racers and Edmonton Oilers in the World Hockey Association .

Career

During his junior years he played with the Niagara Falls Flyers in the OHA . With players like Jean Pronovost , Derek Sanderson , Bernie Parent and Rick Ley , the junior team was very strong and, after an unsuccessful attempt in 1963, won the Memorial Cup in 1965. The Flyers were a junior team of the Boston Bruins , which brought him in the 1964/65 season for two games in the NHL.

Until the 1966/67 season he did not get the breakthrough with the Bruins. He often played for the Oklahoma City Blazers in the Central Professional Hockey League and the Buffalo Bisons in the American Hockey League .

In 1967 the NHL was expanded and in the 1967 NHL Expansion Draft , the Minnesota North Stars brought him into their roster. Here he fought for a regular place and was able to attract attention in the first year. With 15 points he was the most successful scorer in the playoffs. In the 1969/70 season he took a big step. After two seasons with 14 goals each, he has now scored 36 goals. The fans were especially happy about his goal celebration, the Goldy Shuffle . He represented the North Stars in the NHL All-Star Game and was called to the squad of the NHL team at the 1972 Summit Series . Here he was used three times and also scored a hit. In a row with Dennis Hextall and Danny Grant , he was always one of the top scorers on his team.

In Minnesota they rebuilt the team and gave it to the New York Rangers in November 1976 . After he could not build on previous achievements there, he moved to the Indianapolis Racers in the WHA . After a year he was sent to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for Juha Widing . After starting his career with a few future stars on his team, it ended with young Wayne Gretzky with the Oilers.

On February 15, 1992, the Minnesota North Stars honored him by giving his jersey number 8 to no more players.

In the 1990s he trained the San Antonio Iguanas in the CHL . He had alcohol problems away from the ice and was diagnosed with HIV infection. In 1996 he died of AIDS .
