Dennis Harold Hextall (born April 17, 1943 in Poplar Point , Manitoba ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player . The attacker played over 700 games in the National Hockey League , most of them for the Minnesota North Stars and Detroit Red Wings .
Career
Dennis Hextall played in his youth for the Brandon Wheat Kings in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) in his home province. With the team he took part in the qualifying games for the Memorial Cup in 1962 and 1963 , but missed the final. Without the prospect of switching to the professional field at this point in time, the attacker enrolled at the University of North Dakota in the fall of 1963 and played two years with their ice hockey team, the North Dakota Fighting Sioux , at the beginning of the 1964/65 season of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA). In both seasons he was elected to a WCHA All-Star Team before he moved to the Knoxville Knights in the Eastern Hockey League in 1966 and thus became active as a professional for the first time. His further path led him initially also through minor leagues , so he was active for the Omaha Knights in the Central Professional Hockey League and for the Buffalo Bisons in the American Hockey League . The bison served as the farm team of the New York Rangers from the National Hockey League (NHL), in which the Canadian finally came to his first two NHL appearances as part of the Stanley Cup playoffs in 1968 . Nevertheless, the attacker could not earn a regular place with the Rangers in the following season 1968/69, so he was given up in June 1969 with Léon Rochefort to the Los Angeles Kings , who sent Réal Lemieux to New York.
After just under half a year in Los Angeles, which he also partly spent in the AHL with the Springfield Kings , the Kings transferred him to the Canadiens de Montréal in January 1970 in exchange for Dick Duff . There he did not receive an ice age in the NHL and ended the season again in the AHL, with the Voyageurs de Montréal . As a result, the Canadiens sent him for a financial return to the California Golden Seals , where he completed his first full NHL season in 1970/71, scoring 52 points . With these achievements he recommended himself to the Minnesota North Stars , who signed him in May 1971 and sent Joey Johnston and Walt McKechnie to California. In the following two years, Hextall established himself as a regular scorer with the North Stars and achieved his personal career best with 82 points each, while he was also appointed to the NHL All-Star Games in 1974 and 1975 .
Nevertheless, the attacker was released in February 1976 to the Detroit Red Wings , which in return sent Bill Hogaboam and a second-round vote for the 1976 NHL Amateur Draft to Minnesota. In the Motor City , Hextall could not build on his previous achievements and at the beginning of the 1977/78 season nevertheless took over the captaincy of the Red Wings, which he however temporarily shared with Dan Maloney , Nick Libett and Paul Woods . In February 1979 the striker changed one last time and joined the Washington Capitals as a free agent , in which he only played 15 games in the 1979/80 season and subsequently ended his career. Overall, Hextall came to 703 games in his NHL career and posted 509 points.
After the end of his career, Hextall was temporarily active as a coach in the junior area and acted as commissioner and president of the International Hockey League .
