Bryan Aldwyn Hextall senior (born July 31, 1913 in Grenfell , Saskatchewan , † July 25, 1984 in Portage la Prairie , Manitoba ) was a Canadian ice hockey player (right winger) and coach who worked for the New York Rangers in the 1936-1948 National Hockey League played.
Career
Before Hextall moved to the New York Rangers in the NHL at the age of 23, he had played in western Canada, including Vancouver.
After three games in the 1936/37 season , he made the breakthrough in the following season. Many years before this became a common tactic, he played left-handed on the right wing. He preferred the angle to the gate that this position gave him. He managed to score over 20 goals in six consecutive seasons. He was a regular among the top scorers in the NHL, scoring the most goals in the NHL in 1940 and 1941. In the 1939/40 season he decided the final series with a goal in stoppage time and thus secured the Stanley Cup win for the Rangers . Four times in a row he was voted the NHL's best right winger in the NHL All-Star Team .
The war and liver disease took him out of the action for almost two years. He returned to the 1946/47 season and again managed over 20 goals. After another season in the NHL, he played one more season in the American Hockey League .
A few years later he tried his hand at lower leagues as a coach.
He passed on his enthusiasm for ice hockey to his sons Bryan junior and Dennis . Both played for the Rangers and after the expansion of the league in the late 1960s they each made over 500 NHL games. His grandson Ron Hextall started his NHL career in 1987 and was one of the best goalkeepers of his time.
Bryan Hextall was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1969 .
