Bronco Joseph Horvath (born March 12, 1930 in Port Colborne , Ontario , † December 17, 2019 in Barnstable , Massachusetts , USA ) was a Canadian ice hockey player and coach who played 470 games for, among other things, in the course of his active career between 1948 and 1970 the New York Rangers , Montreal Canadiens , Boston Bruins , Chicago Blackhawks , Toronto Maple Leafs and Minnesota North Stars in the National Hockey League (NHL) on the position of the center has denied. Horvath, who was inducted into the AHL Hall of Fame in 2015 , celebrated his greatest achievements in the American Hockey League (AHL), where he won the Calder Cup three times for the Rochester Americans . He had his best season in the NHL in 1960, when he shared the title of best goalscorer with Bobby Hull and was called to the NHL Second All-Star Team .

Career

Horvath had to wait a long time to be noticed in the National Hockey League (NHL). He played for the Springfield Indians and the Syracuse Warriors in the American Hockey League (AHL) for five years , before moving to the Edmonton Flyers in the Western Hockey League (WHL), where he was the league's top scorer. Here he played with the then 19-year-old Johnny Bucyk and won the Lester Patrick Cup with the team at the end of the season .

For the 1955/56 season , the New York Rangers bought the rights to Horvath, which until then were with the Detroit Red Wings . After a good first season, the Rangers sold him after a few games in his second year to the Canadiens de Montréal . Here he came only to one use and played mostly in the AHL for the Rochester Americans . The following summer, the Boston Bruins brought him into their squad in the Intra-League Draft . Together with Johnny Bucyk and Vic Stasiuk , who were also both of Ukrainian descent, he formed the so-called "Uke Line" . In this storm series he had his most successful years and in the 1959/60 season he was the most successful goalscorer in the NHL with 39 goals together with Bobby Hull . Hull scored one more assist and became the league's top scorer. The Bruins reached the final series of the Stanley Cup that year, but were subject to the Canadiens de Montréal there.

In the following years, he regularly changed teams via intra-league drafts . The 1961/62 season he played for the Chicago Black Hawks , a year later he returned to the Rangers, which let him move to the Toronto Maple Leafs before the end of the season . Until the end of his career, he played mostly in the AHL for the Rochester Americans , with whom he won the Calder Cup three times between 1965 and 1968 . This time was interrupted by a brief return to the NHL. The Minnesota North Stars , where Bill Masterton died, received the rights to him from the Maple Leafs. So he played 14 games in the new team's jersey.

He later coached the North Stars before coaching the London Knights in the Ontario Hockey Association and the Cape Cod Cubs . In 2015, he was inducted into the AHL Hall of Fame for his services . Horvath, who last lived in South Yarmouth , Massachusetts , died on November 17, 2019 at the age of 89 in a hospital in nearby Hyannis , a neighborhood in Barnstable .
