Yarmouth is a city in Barnstable County in the US state of Massachusetts . The population in 2010 was 23,793.

Yarmouth is located on Cape Cod on Cape Cod Bay . The US Highway 6 runs through the town. To the west of the county seat (includes County Seat ) Barnstable , East Dennis on immediately. The closest major city, Boston with Logan International Airport, is around 100 kilometers to the northwest.

history

The indigenous people of the area were the Wampanoag Indians. In 1638 a participant of the Mayflower stayed briefly in what is now Yarmouth, but the settlement was only founded in 1639 by other European emigrants and named after Great Yarmouth in Norfolk . The main livelihoods of the residents were initially agriculture, forestry and fishing, and later also shipbuilding and road construction. In the second half of the 17th century , the Indians began to sell land to European farmers, which is why more settlers settled there.

Yarmouth is home to many historically valuable buildings. The list of entries in the National Register of Historic Places in Barnstable County includes: Northside Historic District , Bass River Historic District , Yarmouth Camp Ground Historic District , Thomas Bray Farm , Taylor-Bray Farm and the Baxter Mill .

After the election of John F. Kennedy as President of the United States of America , the place gained increased tourist attention from the 1960s onwards due to its proximity to the village of Hyannis , in whose Hyannis Port district the Kennedys own and often stay. As part of the Cape Cod National Seashore , Yarmouth continues to appeal to visitors from all over the world as a travel destination with a combination of scenic beauty and well-preserved historical attractions.

In 2010 a population of 23,793 people was determined, which means a decrease of 4.1% compared to the year 2000. The average age at this point in time was 51.4 years, well above the value for Massachusetts, which was 39.2 years. 23.3% of today's residents are from Irish immigrants . Other significant immigrant groups during the early days of the town came from England ( 16.6%) , Italy ( 9.2%) , Germany (7.2%) and France ( 5.1%) .
