The Barnstable County is a county in the state of Massachusetts and coincides with Cape Cod . The county seat is Barnstable .
geography
The county has an area of 3382 square kilometers, of which 2357 square kilometers are water. It is bordered to the northwest by Plymouth County and to the south by Dukes County and Nantucket County .
history
Barnstable County was one of three founding counties of Plymouth Colony in 1685 . In 1903, Guglielmo Marconi of the Marconi Wireless Station Site in Wellfleet, Cape Cod, sent the first public telegraph message across the Atlantic Ocean.
Two sites in Barnstable County have the status of a National Historic Landmark because of their historical significance , the Louis Brandeis House and the Kennedy Compound , which was the residence of Joseph P. Kennedy and later the summer retreat of John F. Kennedy .

According to the 2000 census , Barnstable County's population was 222,230 people in 94,822 households and 61,065 families. The population was 94.23 percent white, 1.79 percent African American, 0.63 percent Asian, and 0.56 percent Native American. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.35 percent of the population. The per capita income was $ 25,318; 4.6 percent of families and 6.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
