history

Dennis was founded in 1639 as part of the village of Yarmouth . In 1793 the city officially became independent. The place was named after the pastor Josiah Dennis who worked there. There wasn't enough land for agriculture, so shipping became the town's main source of income; the corresponding operations were mainly located around the Shiverick Shipyard . Nowadays, Dennis, with its colonial, stately homes and picturesque beaches along the southern Nantucket Sound, is a popular coastal destination along the northern coast of Cape Cod Bay . The Cape Playhouse in northern Dennis is the oldest summer theater in the United States; the actress Bette Davis worked there as an usher and was discovered about it.
