The Baxter Mill is a historic watermill and now a museum in West Yarmouth in the state of Massachusetts in the United States . The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981 .

description

The Baxter Mill is located on the north side of Massachusetts Route 28 and is right next to Mill Pond, from which Mill Creek flows into the Atlantic Ocean . The area is enclosed with an 8  ft (2.4  m ) high chain link fence. The building itself has a square floor plan with 20 ft (6.1 m) edge length and is clad with wooden shingles. Four steps lead to the main entrance on the south side of the mill, and a side entrance is on the east side.

The building used as a flour mill was built by John and Shubel Baxter in 1710 and originally had an outside water wheel that powered the millstones inside. In 1860 the original structure was replaced by the successor building that still stands today, and the wooden water wheel was replaced by an internal, 5 ft (1.5 m) high iron water turbine with a diameter of 4 ft (1.2 m). The original turbine was replaced by an exact copy during restoration work in 1961 and can now be seen outside the building as an exhibit in the museum. The Baxter Mill was the only turbine-powered mill on Cape Cod ; all others used external water wheels or wind turbines.

After the restoration was completed, the building was given to the city as a museum.
