Weitra Upper Gate
The Obere Tor is a city gate of the fortifications of the city of Weitra in Lower Austria . The building is a listed building .
history
The Upper Gate in the east of the city fortifications - also called Zwettlertor - was built in 1526. The lower gate in the west was demolished in 1885, with the remains of the wall near the house at Untere Landstrasse 153.
architecture
The upper gate has a flat arched archway on the east side, which was extended in 1967. The archway stands between two tongue walls. Above a simple rectangular window there is a piece of entablature with the inscription Stadt Weitra and above it a coat of arms with the depictions of the double-headed eagle, the town of Weitra and Fürstenberg from 1693 and 1967 reconstructed. The upper end of the gate tower has artillery loopholes and crowning round battlements from the end of the 16th century.
