Philip Anthony "Phil" Esposito , OC (born February 20, 1942 in Sault Ste. Marie , Ontario ) is a former Italo - Canadian ice hockey player , coach and official who played 1412 games during his active career between 1963 and 1981 for the Chicago Black Hawks , Boston Bruins and New York Rangers in the National Hockey League on the position of the center . Esposito is one of the most successful players of the 1970s and one of the best players in the NHL at all. During his 18 seasons in the NHL, he won the Stanley Cup in 1970 and 1972 for the Boston Bruins . He has also received numerous awards, culminating in his induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1984. After retiring , Esposito served as general manager of the New York Rangers, which he also trained in two short terms, and the Tampa Bay Lightning .
Career
Esposito played with Roger Crozier during his junior years with the St. Catharines Teepees in the Ontario Hockey Association . After his time as a junior, he found it difficult to make the leap into the NHL. He played in the Eastern Professional Hockey League , especially for the St. Louis Braves, and moved with the team to the Central Professional Hockey League .
After strong performances with 80 points in the first 43 games, the Chicago Blackhawks brought him into the NHL during the 1963/64 season . However, there he was unable to build on his previous achievements straight away. Even when he played in a row with Bobby Hull , he lacked the trust of his coach Billy Reay . After four acceptable years in Chicago, he was given to the Boston Bruins .
In Boston he made the breakthrough to one of the great stars of the NHL from the 1967/68 season . After 86 points in his first year, he was the first player to reach the 100 point mark with 126 points the following year. Together with his teammate Bobby Orr , he dominated the league. In the 1969/70 season he led the Bruins back to a Stanley Cup victory after 29 years . He repeated this success in the 1971/72 season .
During the 1975/76 season he was sold to the New York Rangers . He played there until 1981. But he could no longer build on the successes in Boston.
From 1986 to 1998 he was General Manager of New York Rangers. During this time he helped out twice as a trainer. In 1992, he became the first general manager to take over the newly established Tampa Bay Lightning franchise .
