David Wilfred "Dave" Maloney (born July 31, 1956 in Kitchener , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 706 games for the New York Rangers and Buffalo Sabers in the National Hockey League between 1972 and 1985 (NHL) on the position of defender . With the New York Rangers, for which he completed most of the games and reached the final series as part of the Stanley Cup playoffs in 1979 , Maloney was the 17th team captain in franchise history between 1978 and 1980 .
Career
Maloney spent his junior career between 1972 and 1974 with the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA). After his second year, at the end of which he was called up after 68 scorer points in 69 games in the league's Second All-Star Team, the 17-year-old was 14th in the first round of the New York Rangers in the 1974 NHL Amateur Draft selected from the National Hockey League (NHL).
The Rangers did not hesitate and brought the defender into the professional field as early as 1974/75 at the age of 18. They first used him in their farm team , the Providence Reds , in the American Hockey League (AHL), but made his debut in the NHL during the season. There he came to four missions. In the following game year, the Canadian was initially active in the AHL, but worked out a regular place in the NHL squad in New York in the second half of the season, so that he ran permanently for the Rangers from mid-February 1976. Maloney quickly established himself in the league and, after his second full season in the jersey of the "Broadway Blueshirts", he succeeded Phil Esposito as the team captain of the franchise . In the course of the Stanley Cup playoffs in 1979 , the young captain helped ensure that the team reached the final series of the Stanley Cup , which was lost, however, 1: 4 against the Canadiens de Montréal . Shortly after the beginning of the 1980/81 season , the defender stepped down from the captaincy after a little over two years to Walt Tkaczuk . Nevertheless, he remained an integral part of the squad, which had its qualities especially in the majority game. He mostly formed a defender duo with Barry Beck .
In the mid-1980s, the successful years of the Rangers ended and so Maloney, after only scoring three points in the first 16 games of the 1984/85 season , joined the Buffalo in December 1984 with Chris Renaud within the state of New York Sabers transferred. Steve Patrick and Jim Wiemer gave these to the Rangers. In the jersey of the Sabers, the defensive player ended his active career at the end of the season at the age of 29, in order to work full-time as a broker on Wall Street . During the summer breaks of the previous two years, he had already prepared for the time after his career at the investment bank Bear Stearns .
