Barry David Beck (born June 3, 1957 in Vancouver , British Columbia ) is a Canadian ice hockey player (defender) who played for the Colorado Rockies , New York Rangers and Los Angeles Kings in the National Hockey League from 1977 to 1990 .

Career

Beck played with Stan Smyl at the New Westminster Bruins in the Western Canada Hockey League during his junior years . Three years in a row he and his team reached the finals of the Memorial Cup , which the Bruins won in 1977. The Colorado Rockies selected him in the 1977 NHL Amateur Draft as the second player in the first round. Also in the 1977 WHA Amateur Draft , the Calgary Cowboys used the second draft law for Beck.

He chose the Rockies and the NHL. There he made his breakthrough straight away. He had a great rookie season with 22 goals, 38 assists and 60 points, a top performance for rookie defenders at the time. Brian Leetch only exceeded these values eleven years later . In the election for Rookie of the Year , he finished second behind Mike Bossy . In his first season he represented his team at the NHL All-Star Game , for which he was nominated for five years in a row. After ten games in the 1979/80 season moved to the New York Rangers in exchange for five players . With the Rangers he soon became the new captain of the team and was a great pillar of the defensive. In 1981 he represented his country at the Canada Cup . Injuries accompanied him over the years, so that he ended his career during the 1985/86 season. For the 1989/90 season he was persuaded and played 52 games for the Los Angeles Kings to superstar Wayne Gretzky .

Beck found a new challenge in 2006 when he assumed the position of General Manager at the Hong Kong Academy of Ice Hockey .
