Career

At the age of 13, Smyl left home to work on his ice hockey career with the Bellingham Blazers . Between 1975 and 1978, the striker ran for the New Westminster Bruins in the Western Canada Hockey League with his team, which also included players such as Barry Beck , John Ogrodnick , Ken Berry and Scott MacLeod , three times in a row from 1976 to 1978 Final tournament for the Memorial Cup . In the second and third years, his team also won the title. In 1978 in particular, Smyl played a major role in this with his outstanding performance. But due to his small size he was selected in the 1978 NHL Amateur Draft only in the second round as 44th by the Vancouver Canucks .

In order to show in his first training camp with the Canucks that he is not lacking in assertiveness, he chose Harold Snepsts as the biggest player in the squad and put him on the ice. He was enthusiastic about the commitment of the young player and supported him in his development. Smyl immediately made it into the NHL for the 1978/79 season .

It quickly turned out that he was exactly the player they needed in Vancouver. Between the seasons 1979/80 and 1982/83 he alternated with Thomas Gradin in places 1 and 2 of the Canucks scorer list. In 1982 he and his team reached the final series of the Stanley Cup , but there they lost to the current series winner, the New York Islanders .

When he ended his active career after the 1990/91 season, he had the most games, goals, assists and points of all Canucks players in the 13 years. Trevor Linden surpassed him in the course of the 2007/08 season in the templates and took over his last record. His number 12 jersey has not been awarded by the Canucks since then.

Smyl remained loyal to his club and worked as an assistant coach for eight years immediately after retiring. From 1999 he was the head coach of some of the Canucks farm teams. His stops here were the Syracuse Crunch , Kansas City Blades and Manitoba Moose . Since 2005 he has held various positions at the Vancouver Canucks.
