John Alexander Ogrodnick (born June 20, 1959 in Ottawa , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player (right winger) who played for the Detroit Red Wings , Québec Nordiques and the New York Rangers in the National Hockey League from 1979 to 1993 .

Career

Success marks his time as a junior. With the New Westminster Bruins in the WHL , he won the Memorial Cup in 1977 and 1978 . With him was the future NHL player Stan Smyl in the squad of the Bruins. In 1979 he took part in the Junior World Championship with the Canadian team.

The Detroit Red Wings selected him in the 1979 NHL Entry Draft in the fourth round as 66th. In the coming 1979/80 season he made the leap into the NHL after a stay in the AHL farm team of the Wings, with the Adirondack Red Wings . In his seven and a half years in Detroit he was three times the best scorer of the Red Wings and in the 1984/85 season he even surpassed the 100 point mark with 105 points. That season he was also elected to the NHL's First All-Star Team. He has been nominated five times for the NHL All-Star Game .

In the middle of the 1986/87 season he was given to the Québec Nordiques . Here he played the season to an end before moving to the New York Rangers . He stayed in New York for five years before his contract there was terminated. At the age of 33 he returned to the Red Wings for the 1992/93 season . As in his first year as a professional, he played in both Adirondack and Detroit. After the end of the season he ended his career.
