Keith Jeffrey Brown (* 6. May 1960 in Corner Brook , Newfoundland and Labrador ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player , who during his playing career from 1976 to 1995 among other 979 games for the Chicago Blackhawks and Florida Panthers in the National Hockey League on contested the position of defender .
Career
Brown spent his first season in the junior division first in the 1976/77 season with the Fort Saskatchewan Traders in the Alberta Junior Hockey League . After the defender was named rookie of the year and best defender in the league, he was drawn to the Western Canada Hockey League . There he was active for the Portland Winter Hawks for the next two years and collected 196 scorer points and 177 missions as an offensive defensive player . After his first year, he and John Ogrodnick received the Jim Piggott Memorial Trophy as the best newcomer to the league. In his second and last year in Portland, he reached the final of the President's Cup with the team , where it was defeated by the Brandon Wheat Kings . He was also awarded the Bill Hunter Memorial Trophy as the best defensive player in the league. Then Brown was selected in the 1979 NHL Entry Draft in seventh overall position by the Chicago Black Hawks from the National Hockey League .
Immediately after the draft, the Canadian switched to the professional field and joined the Black Hawks for the 1979/80 season . In Chicago Brown was an immediate regular player, but from then on focused his game more on the defensive. His playing style, which was characterized by great commitment, subsequently meant that he was only able to play a small part of the season's games in the 1981/82 , 1987/88 and 1992/93 seasons due to injuries. Brown spent a total of 14 seasons up to the summer of 1993 in the service of the Chicago Blackhawks. He reached the final series with the franchise as part of the Stanley Cup playoffs in 1992 , which was lost to the defending champion Pittsburgh Penguins .
Shortly before the start of the 1993/94 season, the Blackhawks transferred the defender to the newly formed Florida Panthers in exchange for Darin Kimble . They had struck gold in the search for an experienced player in the person of Brown. After another two NHL seasons for the Panthers, Brown ended his active career in the summer of 1995 at the age of 35.
International
For his home country Brown was active in the 1979 World Junior Championships in Sweden . He was used in all five tournament games and contributed two assists to reach fifth place.
