The playoffs for the Stanley Cup the year 1992 began on 18 April 1992 and ended on 1 June 1992 with a 4: 0 win the Pittsburgh Penguins over the Chicago Blackhawks . The Penguins defended their title from the previous year and won their second Stanley Cup in their second finals. They also questioned in their team captain Mario Lemieux the top scorer as well as with the Conn Smythe Trophy winning Most Valuable Player of the playoffs. Lemieux was after Bernie Parent the second player in NHL history to defend the Smythe Trophy. The defeated Blackhawks, on the other hand, played their first Stanley Cup final since 1973 and suffered their fifth consecutive defeat.

The first playoff round turned out to be extremely balanced, so that six of the eight series went over the full distance of seven games and a record was set with 54 first-round games. In contrast, five of the following series ended in a sweep , including both conference finals and the Stanley Cup finals. Furthermore, the franchise of the Atlanta / Calgary Flames missed the playoffs for the first time since 1975, so with 16 seasons one of the longest series in league history came to an end.

In addition, for the first time in league history, a playoff game was decided by video evidence when, according to the TV images, it became clear that Sergei Fyodorov's shot in the overtime of the game against Minnesota had not hit the bar, but crossed the goal line.

mode

After the four teams with the best points from each division have qualified, the playoffs , which are held in the knockout system , start . The respective first meets the fourth and the second meets the third of each division, so that the division winners are played out in the first two rounds. These then compete in the conference finals for entry into the Stanley Cup finals.

All series in each round are played in best-of-seven mode, which means that a team needs four wins to reach the next round. The higher seeded team has home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, home rights will change from game to game. The higher-ranked team has a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games. The winner of the Prince of Wales Conference will receive the Prince of Wales Trophy and the winner of the Campbell Conference will receive the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl .

In the case of games that remain a draw after the regular playing time of 60 minutes, overtime follows . It ends with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .

Stanley Cup winner

The Stanley Cup winner Pittsburgh Penguins traditionally had a total of 52 people, including 31 players and some officials, including the coaching staff and management, engraved on the base of the trophy. During the season, Bob Johnson , who had led the team to the title the previous year, died of cancer. His name was also engraved on the cup. Among the officials were the assistant coaches Rick Kehoe and Barry Smith , as well as Scout Charlie Hodge , who won the Stanley Cup four times as a player. The rule for the players is that they should either have played 41 games for the team in the regular season or one game in the final series. Exceptions were made for Mike Needham and Jeff Daniels.

The 31 players in Pittsburgh consist of three goalkeepers, nine defenders and 19 attackers. There were four Europeans in the Penguins' squad and an Asian, Jim Paek.
