He was then selected in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft in the first round in eleventh position by the Hartford Whalers . In the 1985/86 season the defender also started in the professional field, but was sent back to the LHJMQ after a few missions. There he was used at the Olympiques de Hull , with which he won the Coupe du Président at the end of the season. He also received a nomination in First All-Star team in the league and was with the Emile Bouchard Trophy the best defensive player of the regular season as well as the Guy Lafleur Trophy for the most valuable player of the playoffs , which he shared with his teammate Luc Robitaille received , excellent. Then the Olympiques played in the tournament for the Memorial Cup .
From the 1986/87 season Côté belonged - with the exception of twelve missions in the farm team , the Binghamton Whalers , in the American Hockey League - to the permanent staff in Hartford. This lasted until the end of the 1990/91 season . Only in the 1989/90 season he missed most of the games due to an injury. In September 1991, the Whalers and the Defense Counsel finally parted ways. In exchange for the Russian striker Andrei Nikolischin , he moved to the Washington Capitals . With the team from the US capital, he was able to significantly increase his points and played there until the end of March 1998. As part of the trade deadline , the Toronto Maple Leafs secured the services of the defender. Jeff Brown moved to Washington for Côté .
The Canadian spent only one and a half years in Toronto, but they were extremely successful with reaching the play-off semi- finals in the 1998/99 season . In October 1999, Côté was given a second-round vote in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft to the Chicago Blackhawks . For the Blackhawks he completed only 45 games, since he was given in February 2000 together with Dave Manson to the reigning Stanley Cup winner and renewed championship favorites Dallas Stars . In exchange, Kevin Dean , Derek Plante and a second-round suffrage in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft moved to Chicago.
With Dallas, the defender reached the final series of the Stanley Cup, where the team in the best-of-seven series was subject to the New Jersey Devils in six games and thus missed the title defense. After 28 season and 23 play-off games, the time with the Texans was over again. As an unrestricted free agent , Côté returned to the Washington Capitals, where he spent two more full seasons. After only one use in the 2002/03 season , the Capitals dissolved the contract with him, whereupon he could not find a new team and ended his career.
