The playoffs for the Stanley Cup in 1951 began on March 27, 1951 and ended on April 21, 1951 with the Toronto Maple Leafs ' 4-1 victory over the Canadiens de Montréal . The Maple Leafs won their fourth title in the last five years and the ninth title in franchise history . The Canadiens, however, played their first final since 1947 , in which they were also defeated by the Maple Leafs 2-4. In the meantime, both teams with Max Bentley (Toronto) and Maurice Richard (Montréal) each provided a top scorer this post-season . In addition, the 1951 Stanley Cup final marked the last one to date in which every game was decided in overtime (as of the 2019 playoffs).

mode

The four best teams in the league qualified for the playoffs. In the semi-finals, the first and third as well as the second and fourth of the final table faced each other. The respective winners then contested the Stanley Cup final.

All series were held in best-of-seven mode , which means that a team needed four wins to advance. The higher seeded team had home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, the home law changed from game to game. The higher-ranked team had a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games.

Overtime followed for games that remained tied after 60 minutes of regular playing time . It ended with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .
