Calvin Pearly Gardner (born October 30, 1924 in Transcona , Manitoba ; † October 10, 2001 ) was a Canadian ice hockey player and coach who worked for the New York Rangers , Toronto Maple Leafs , Chicago, among others, from 1945 to 1961 Blackhawks and Boston Bruins have played in the National Hockey League . His sons Paul and Dave and grandson Ryan were also professional ice hockey players.
Career
Cal Gardner began his career as a hockey player in the amateur team of the Winnipeg Rangers, with whom he won the Memorial Cup in 1943 . The attacker then spent a year with the Port Arthur Navy before taking a year off. For the 1945/46 season he made his debut in professional ice hockey for the New York Rovers from the Eastern Hockey League . Even during the season, but he moved to the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League , for which he was on the ice two and a half years before he on April 26, 1948. with Bill Juzda , Rene Trudell and the rights to Frank Mathers in Exchange for Wally Stanowski and Elwyn Morris was given to the Toronto Maple Leafs . With the Maple Leafs, the left-handed shooter succeeded in winning the prestigious Stanley Cup in 1949 and 1951 . During his time with the Ontario team , he also took part in the NHL All-Star Game twice.
On September 11, 1952 Gardner was transferred together with Ray Hannigan , Al Rollins and Gus Mortson for Harry Lumle to the Chicago Blackhawks , with whom he only stayed for one season before he ran up for their league rivals Boston Bruins from 1953 to 1957 . In the 1957/58 season, the center was active as a player- coach for the Springfield Indians from the American Hockey League , with whom he was defeated in the finals for the Calder Cup to the Hershey Bears in the best-of-seven series with 2-4. This was followed by one season each with the Providence Reds in the AHL and the Kingston Frontenacs from the Eastern Professional Hockey League , before he was 36 after the 1960/61 season, which he had spent with the Cleveland Barons from the AHL Years ended his active career.
