Walter Peter "Wally" Stanowski (born April 28, 1919 in Winnipeg , Manitoba ; † June 28, 2015 in Toronto , Ontario ) was a Canadian ice hockey player who played 488 games for the Toronto Maple in the course of his active career between 1936 and 1952 Leafs and New York Rangers has played in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . During his ten seasons in the NHL, Stanowski won the Stanley Cup four times with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1942 , 1945 , 1947 and 1948 . In addition, he was once appointed to the NHL First All-Star Team and took part in the NHL All-Star Game just as often .

Career

Stanowski spent his junior years between 1936 and 1938 with the St. Boniface Seals in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League . With the team, the defender won the Memorial Cup in 1938 , to which he contributed ten scorer points in eleven games . During his time in the junior division, the New York Americans from the National Hockey League had already secured the transfer rights to Stanowski, but in October 1937 they ceded them to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Jack Shill .

For the farm team of the Maple Leafs, the Syracuse Stars , from the American Hockey League , the defender came to use at the beginning of the 1938/39 season . In the following season he was then briefly with league competitor Providence Reds in use before he made his debut for Toronto in the NHL. As a result, the Canadian established himself in the team's squad and was appointed to the NHL First All-Star Team at the end of his second NHL season in the spring of 1941 , after scoring 21 times in 47 games. His time in the Maple Leafs jersey was crowned by winning the Stanley Cup in the 1942 playoffs . After winning the title, Stanowski's career was stopped abruptly because he was drafted into the Royal Canadian Air Force due to World War II . In his native city of Winnipeg , he therefore did his military service between 1942 and 1944 .

For the 1944/45 season Stanowski finally returned to the Maple Leafs and won his second title with the team at the end of the Stanley Cup playoffs in 1945 . As a result, the defensive player completed three more seasons in the service of Toronto and won two more cups with the team in 1947 and 1948 . Less than two weeks after the fourth triumph, Stanowski was transferred to the New York Rangers at the end of April 1948 together with Elwyn Morris , who received Cal Gardner , Bill Juzda and Rene Trudell and the transfer rights to Frank Mathers . The now 29-year-old completed a total of three seasons for the Rangers and let his NHL career slowly end until 1951. At the end of his career, he played in the 1951/52 season for another year of play for the Cincinnati Mohawks in the American Hockey League, before he declared the same for over in the summer of 1953 at the age of 34.

After the end of his career, Stanowski worked successfully in the sale of construction equipment . In 2004 he was inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame and is an honorary member of the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame . Stanowski died in June 2015 at the age of 96 after a brief and serious illness in his adopted home Toronto . At the time of his death, he was the last living member of Toronto's championship teams in 1942 and 1945.
