The playoffs for the Stanley Cup in 1948 began on March 24, 1948 and ended on April 14, 1948 with the 4-0 win of the Toronto Maple Leafs against the Detroit Red Wings . The Maple Leafs won their second title in a row, their third in the last four years and the seventh in their franchise history . In addition, they provided Theodore Kennedy as the best scorer and most accurate scorer of the post-season . For the Red Wings it was the second final defeat against Toronto in a row after 1945 , before the third of this kind should follow in the following year .
mode
The four best teams in the league qualified for the playoffs. In the semi-finals, the first and third as well as the second and fourth of the final table faced each other. The respective winners then contested the Stanley Cup final.
All series were held in best-of-seven mode , which means that a team needed four wins to advance. The higher seeded team had home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, the home law changed from game to game. The higher-ranked team had a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games.
Overtime followed for games that remained tied after 60 minutes of regular playing time . It ended with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .
