The playoffs for the Stanley Cup of 1976 began on April 6, 1976 and ended on May 16, 1976 with the 4-0 victory of the Canadiens de Montréal against the Philadelphia Flyers . The Canadiens won their 19th title in franchise history and at the same time ended the series of Flyers, which after two Stanley Cup victories in a row missed their third success. However, Philadelphia's Reggie Leach set a playoff record with 19 goals scored, which to date (as of playoffs 2019) has only been set once by Jari Kurri in 1985 . As a result, the attacker became the third player and to date the only outfield player in NHL history to receive the Conn Smythe Trophy as Most Valuable Player of the post-season , despite his team losing the final; previously this was only possible for goalkeepers Roger Crozier ( 1966 ) and Glenn Hall ( 1968 ).

mode

The twelve teams qualified for the playoffs were placed on the seeding list according to their performance in the regular season (most points; most wins in the event of a tie). However, the four division winners were set by bye for the quarter-finals, while the remaining eight participants played a preliminary round. In all rounds, the pairings were determined by the seeding list, so the highest seeded team met the lowest seeded team, number two met the penultimate team, etc.

The series of the preliminary round were played in the best-of-three mode, the series in all subsequent rounds in the best-of-seven mode, which means that a team needed four wins to progress from the quarter-finals; only two in the first round. The higher-ranked team had - from the second round - home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, the home law changed from game to game. The higher-ranked team had a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games. In the preliminary round, however, the home law changed from game to game.

Overtime followed for games that remained tied after 60 minutes of regular playing time . It ended with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .
