The playoffs for the Stanley Cup of 2007 began on April 11, 2007 and ended on June 6, 2007 with the Anaheim Ducks ' 4-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators . In their second finals since losing in the play-off final in 2003, the Anaheim Ducks won the first Stanley Cup their franchise credit history and presented in Scott Niedermayer also with the Conn Smythe Trophy winning Most Valuable Player of the playoffs. The defeated Ottawa Senators, who played their first Stanley Cup final, led the scorer list with three of their players - Daniel Alfredsson , Jason Spezza and Dany Heatley .

The 2007 Stanley Cup playoffs marked the first time in NHL history that the previous season's two finalists, the Carolina Hurricanes and the Edmonton Oilers , each failed to qualify for the post-season . Furthermore, this year the Atlanta Thrashers took part in the playoffs for the only time in their twelve-year history.

mode

After the three division winners and the five other most points teams have qualified the Conference of each conference, start the knock-out system discharged playoffs . The division winner with the best points meets the eighth and thus the worst qualified team, number 2 of this ranking list meets number 7, etc. This mode allows one or more qualified teams to have more points than one of the division winners. The same principle is used to determine the matches in the second playoff round.

Each conference then plays its winner in the conference quarter-finals, conference semifinals and conference finals, who then compete in the final for the Stanley Cup . All series in each round are played in best-of-seven mode, which means that a team needs four wins to reach the next round. The higher seeded team has home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, home rights will change from game to game. The higher-ranked team has a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games. The winner of the Eastern Conference will receive the Prince of Wales Trophy and the winner of the Western Conference will receive the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl .

For games that remain tied after the regular playing time of 60 minutes, overtime follows , which, in contrast to the regular season, is played with five field players. In addition, it ends with the first goal ( Sudden Death ) and not, as usual in the regular season, with a shootout .

(2) Anaheim Ducks - (3) Vancouver Canucks

Four of the five games ended with only one goal difference, three of which were only decided in overtime . Above all, Anaheim's defender duo Chris Pronger and Scott Niedermayer and goalkeeper Jean-Sébastien Giguère were decisive for reaching the Wester Conference final. Roberto Luongo alone could not prevent the Canucks from being eliminated.

Conference finals

Eastern Conference

(1) Buffalo Sabers - (4) Ottawa Senators

In the east, the Ottawa Senators achieved their first Stanley Cup final in franchise history with a clear 4-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabers, who were seeded first, and thus the Prince of Wales Trophy . Despite good performances by Ryan Miller in the goal of the Sabers, it was again the attack series Alfredsson-Spezza-Heatley on the side of the Senators, which was a decisive factor in the series.

(1) Detroit Red Wings - (2) Anaheim Ducks

In terms of play, the Detroit Red Wings largely dominated the series, but through great fighting spirit, which led to victories in the second and fourth game, in which the Anaheim Ducks had to do without their suspended star defender Chris Pronger , Anaheim balanced the series. In the fifth game, the Ducks were finally able to turn the series when they equalized a few seconds before the regular end of the game and scored the winning goal in overtime. The Anaheim Ducks moved into the Stanley Cup final for the second time since 2003 and won the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl .

Stanley Cup Final

(W2) Anaheim Ducks - (E4) Ottawa Senators

In this year's Stanley Cup final , for the first time since 1999, the Anaheim Ducks and the Ottawa Senators met two teams that had never won the Stanley Cup. A team named Ottawa Senators was last able to win the cup in the 1926/27 season, but there is no connection whatsoever between the original Senators at the time and today's Senators. The clash between the Ducks and the Senators marked the third time in a row that a Canadian team meets a team from the Sunbelt of the United States in the final , the last time Tampa Bay played against Calgary and Carolina against Edmonton . The series is also the first playoff series between the two teams, both of which emerged from the NHL expansion in the early 1990s. The last duel between the teams, which took place on January 19, 2006 in Ottawa, won Anaheim, then still under the name Mighty Ducks of Anaheim , 4-3 for themselves.

On the side of the Ottawa Senators, Christoph Schubert has been a German player in the final for a long time, as is Dany Heatley , another player born in Germany. The Swiss Martin Gerber , who won the title with the Carolina Hurricanes last year , reached the final series for the second time in a row, also on Ottawa's side.

The Anaheim Ducks won the first Stanley Cup in their franchise history by beating the Senators 4-1. In addition, this meant the first NHL championship of a team from California. In person from their team captain Scott Niedermayer the Ducks research group also with the Conn Smythe Trophy awarded most valuable player of the playoffs. For his teammate Chris Pronger , winning the Stanley Cup also meant acceptance into the Triple Gold Club .

Stanley Cup winner

The Stanley Cup winner Anaheim Ducks traditionally had a total of 48 people, including 26 players and some officials, including the coaching staff and management, engraved on the base of the trophy. The rule for the players is that they should either have played 41 games for the team in the regular season or one game in the final series. But there are always exceptions.

Anaheim's 26 players are made up of two goalkeepers, seven defenders and 17 attackers, including three Europeans with Teemu Selänne , Samuel Påhlsson and Ilja Brysgalow and a pair of brothers with Rob and Scott Niedermayer .

Best goalkeeper

Marty Turco, a goalkeeper who failed with his team, the Dallas Stars , in the first round of the playoffs, delivered the best statistics during the playoffs . The reason for this was the extremely defensive style of play of both teams in the series between Dallas and Vancouver , from which his counterpart Roberto Luongo also benefited. Turco led all goalkeepers in the categories of catch rates, goals against goals and shutouts .

Anaheim's Jean-Sébastien Giguère and Ottawa's Ray Emery , who led their teams to the finals, performed consistently best . Giguére, who was still missing at the beginning of the playoffs for private reasons and was represented by Ilja Brysgalow , won a total of 13 games. Like Turco, Emery was able to book three shutouts and leave the ice as the winner in 13 games. He also played most of the game minutes.
