The 1922-23 NHL season was the sixth season of the National Hockey League . They played 24 games and the top two played the NHL winner in two games. The leaders of the table, the Ottawa Senators , defeated the Montréal Canadiens with 3-2 goals and met in the semifinals on the winner of the PCHA, the Vancouver Maroons , against whom they prevailed 3-1. Also in Vancouver was the final against the Edmonton Eskimos , the winners of the WCHL. That series was won 2-0 by the Ottawa Senators and won the third Stanley Cup in four years. King Clancy played in all six positions in the final. He even represented his goalie when he had to serve a sentence for beating a stick. The Montréal Canadiens traded their former top scorer Newsy Lalonde to Saskatoon for the Western Canada League for $ 3,500 and an unknown amateur named Aurel Joliat prior to the season .
