Clinton Stevenson "Clint" Benedict (born September 26, 1892 in Ottawa ; † November 12, 1976 ibid) was a Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who played from 1917 to 1930 for the Ottawa Senators and Montreal Maroons in the National Hockey League .

Career

When the NHL was founded, Benedict was 23 years old and had the best goals against goal from the second to the sixth season. In 1920, 1921 and 1923 he won the Stanley Cup with the Ottawa Senators , but he made history with the Montreal Maroons . Not the fourth title win in 1926 , but a broken nose in 1929 after a shot by Howie Morenz caused a stir. To protect the injured nose, he played a few games with a leather mask and was the only goalkeeper with a mask until 1959 . Without a mask, he broke his nose for the second time in the same season and then ended his career.

In 1965 he was honored with the induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame . Benedict was buried in the National Cemetery in Ottawa .
