The 1943/44 NHL season was the 27th season in the National Hockey League . Six teams played 50 games each. The Stanley Cup won the Montréal Canadiens after a 4-0 win in the final series against the Chicago Black Hawks . 28 New York Rangers players were in the Army because of World War II . At the beginning of the season there were only six players from the previous season in the squad. The newly formed team won only one draw from their first 15 games.

The game underwent a serious change due to some rule changes. Until this season, the defending team was not allowed to pass over their own blue line. Since this season there is also the red center line.
