Lady Byng Memorial Trophy
The Lady Byng Memorial Trophy is an ice hockey trophy for the National Hockey League (NHL). It is awarded annually to the player who has been able to combine a high sporting standard and exemplary behavior.
The trophy was donated by Evelyn Byng , wife of the then Governor General of Canada Julian Byng , and was first awarded by her personally in the 1924/25 NHL season . This makes the award the second oldest in the NHL after the Hart Memorial Trophy . After Frank Boucher won the trophy seven times in eight years, he was allowed to keep it and Lady Byng donated a new trophy.
The trophy was called the Lady Byng Trophy until 1949 and was renamed the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy after Lady Byng's death.
Award and history
In the 1923/24 season Frank Nighbor was awarded an individual trophy by the Ottawa Senators with the Hart Trophy as the first player in the history of the National Hockey League . The following season , Lady Byng , the wife of the Governor General of Canada, presented another award, the Lady Byng Trophy. After selecting Frank Neighbor as the first trophy winner, she invited him to Rideau Hall and personally presented him with the trophy. Neighbor was also honored the following season.
Between 1928 and 1935, the New York Rangers ' center Frank Boucher managed to win the Lady Byng Trophy seven times in eight years. The NHL then decided that Boucher could keep the trophy permanently, and Lady Byng donated a new trophy. To date, Boucher is the record winner of the award. After Lady Byng's death in 1949, the NHL donated another trophy and renamed it the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy. The first trophy was destroyed in a fire in Boucher's house in 1962, the second version is now on display in the Hockey Hall of Fame .
It was not until the 1948/49 season that Bill Quackenbush , who had not received a single time penalty in the entire season, was awarded the Lady Byng Trophy as the first defender. In 1985, the Finn Jari Kurri became the first non-Canadian to win the award after 60 years.
The trophy is awarded annually through a vote by the Professional Hockey Writers' Association , in which almost 180 journalists were entitled to vote in 2011. It takes place at the end of the regular season . Each voter can award 10, 7, 5, 3 or one point to a player of his choice on his ballot paper. After the vote, the top three players (finalists) will be announced, but not their order. The trophy is only after the conclusion of the Stanley Cup - Play-offs during the annual NHL Awards awarded.
The current title holder of the 2018/19 season is the Finn Aleksander Barkov of the Florida Panthers , who won the trophy for the first time.

Since he moved to the position of the center in 1960 , he is also the only player to receive the award in two different positions.
A majority of the previous trophy winners, around 85%, come from Canada . This is followed by just four other nations, the USA , Russia , Sweden and Finland , from which several players have been awarded. There was also one winner each from the Czech Republic , Slovenia and Slovakia . Even Stan Mikita , who won the trophy twice, has Slovak citizenship, but played internationally for Canada. The most successful team that does not belong to the original Six teams are the Los Angeles Kings with a total of six winners.
Most often, the trophy was given to center forward , so-called center. In total, almost two thirds of all winners played in this position. In contrast, with Bill Quackenbush , Red Kelly and Brian Campbell, only three different defenders have received a total of five awards in the history of the trophy.
