The 1935/36 NHL season was the 19th season in the National Hockey League . Eight teams played 48 games each. The Stanley Cup won the Detroit Red Wings after a 3-1 win in the final series against the Toronto Maple Leafs . The financial misery continued. The NHL bought the St. Louis Eagles and the New York Americans . The St. Louis player was sold to the other NHL teams and the location was abandoned. A new management was installed in the Americans. Plans to sell the Montréal Canadiens to Cleveland caused quite a stir . Three Montreal businessmen then bought the Canadiens for $ 165,000 and let the team play in Montreal. The longest playoff game in NHL history took place this season between the Red Wings and the Maroons. Detroit's Mud Bruneteau finished the game after 176:30 in overtime , the longest in NHL history.
