The 1940-41 NHL season was the 24th season in the National Hockey League . Seven teams played 48 games each. The Boston Bruins won the Stanley Cup after a 4-0 win in the final series against the Detroit Red Wings . In Montreal, Dick Irvin , the former Leafs coach, took over the coaching job. The restructuring of the weak team began and it would take a few more years for the fruits to ripen. Meanwhile the Bruins dominated the league , led by the " Kraut Line " with Milt Schmidt , Woody Dumart and Bobby Bauer . Hawks goalie Sam LoPresti was one of their targets. He got an incredible 83 shots on goal in one game, of which he saved 80. After no more than 73 shots were fired by a team in any other NHL game, Lopresti may have a record for the ages, but that wasn't the greatest achievement of his life. Two years later he was in the Navy and his ship was sunk. He and his comrades were rescued in a lifeboat after 42 days.
