Walter Edward "Turk" Broda (born May 15, 1914 in Brandon , Manitoba , † October 17, 1972 ) was a Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper and coach who played for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League from 1936 to 1952 .

Career

Toronto's general manager Conn Smythe signed 22-year-old Turk Broda of the Detroit Olympics from the International Hockey League for a record $ 8,000 in 1936 . His time with the Leafs was only interrupted by two years of military service. In the regular season, Broda was a great support for Toronto, as proven by 62 shutouts , but he had his strongest time in the play-offs . With 13 play-off shutouts and a goal against goals of 1.98, he helped the Leafs to five Stanley Cup wins. After finishing his playing career Broda worked as head coach. In 1955 and 1956 he won the Memorial Cup with the Toronto Marlboros from the Ontario Hockey Association . Later, the Canadian was also behind the gang at the London Nationals from the OHA.

In 1967 he was honored with the induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame .
