Mats Näslund (born October 31, 1959 in Timrå ) is a former Swedish ice hockey player . He is a member of the IIHF Hall of Fame and the Triple Gold Club .
Career
Näslund spent the first two years of his professional career at his home club in Timrå. In the summer of 1978 he moved to Brynäs IF and a year later he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft. The Montréal Canadiens pulled him during the NHL Entry Draft 1979 in the second round in a total of 37th position. As the first European-born player in a Canadiens jersey, he made his NHL debut three years later. Due to a great rookie year, the left wing quickly got the nickname "Le Petit Viking" ("The Little Viking") by the fans. In 1990 he returned to Europe, but completed once 34 NHL games with the Boston Bruins in the lockout -Season 1994/95 before then finally ended his career. In Sweden he won the national championship three times.
During his NHL career, Näslund never received more than 19 penalty minutes in any season. Because of this fair play, he was awarded the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy in 1988 . During the NHL All-Star Game in 1988 , he set a new record with five assists.
International
Mats Näslund played for the Swedish national team in various tournaments . He already gained experience in the youth teams in his country. In 1978 and 1979, for example, he won the silver and bronze medals at the World Youth Championships. For the A-Team he competed in five ice hockey world championships and won a bronze, a silver and in 1991 even a gold medal. He also took part in the Canada Cup three times. Through his participation in the 1994 Winter Olympics and the associated Olympic victory, he has been a member of the Triple Gold Club since then , that is, one of the players who have won the Stanley Cup , the World Championship and the Olympic Games at least once .
