Rick Thomas Kehoe (born July 15, 1951 in Windsor , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player and coach . In the National Hockey League he coached the Toronto Maple Leafs and Pittsburgh Penguins .
Career
Kehoe played junior hockey in the OHA with the London Knights and the Hamilton Red Wings . He was selected in the second round of the 1971 NHL Amateur Draft as a 22nd overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs. He played 32 games in 1971/72 with the Tulsa Oilers in the Central Hockey League before moving up to the Maple Leafs. He also led the league scorers' standings in the 1972/73 season with 33 goals. Kehoe was given to the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1974 for Blaine Stoughton , where he was ultimately to end his career. He won the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy in 1980/81 and took part in the NHL's All-Star Game in 1981 and 1983 .
In his career, Kehoe played 906 NHL games, scoring 371 goals, 396 assists and a total of 767 points with just 120 penalty minutes. In 39 playoff games, he made 4 goals, 17 assists (21 points) and got 4 penalty minutes. After retiring from his career in 1986, Kehoe became the Penguins' chief scout and assistant trainer and held this position until 2002. In 2002, Kehoe took over the head coach position from interim coach Herb Brooks , who in turn replaced Ivan Hlinka . Kehoe coached the Penguins from 2002 to 2003 and had a record of 55 wins, 81 losses and 14 draws. Rick Kehoe was replaced by Ed Olczyk after the 2002–03 season.
Kehoe was inducted into the Pittsburgh Penguins Hall of Fame in 1992 and the Western Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1995.
