Dan Brian Bylsma (born September 19, 1970 in Grand Haven , Michigan ) is a former American ice hockey player and current coach . From 2009 to 2014 he coached the Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League and won the Stanley Cup with them in 2009 . He also served as the head coach of the Buffalo Sabers from May 2015 to April 2017 . Since June 2018 he has been working as an assistant coach at the Detroit Red Wings .
Career as a player
Dan Bylsma began his career as a hockey player in the team at Bowling Green State University , for which he was active from 1988 to 1992. During this period he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 1989 in the sixth round as a total of 109th player by the Winnipeg Jets , for which he however never played. Instead, the attacker played from 1992 to 1994 for their farm teams , the Greensboro Monarchs from the East Coast Hockey League , and the American Hockey League teams Rochester Americans , Moncton Hawks , Albany River Rats and Moncton Hawks. On July 7, 1994, the left shooter received a contract with the Los Angeles Kings , for which he made his debut in the National Hockey League in the 1995/96 season , where he remained pointless and punished in four games. In his first two seasons in the Kings franchise, he mainly played for their farm team from the International Hockey League , the Phoenix Roadrunners .
After four more years with the Los Angeles Kings from the NHL, Bylsma signed in the summer of 2000 with their league rivals, the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim , with whom he reached the final of the Stanley Cup in the 2002/03 season, in which he and his team the New Jersey Devils narrowly defeated 3: 4. After the following season he ended his career as a player.
Career as a coach
Immediately after his last year as an active Bylsma began his coaching career and worked in the 2004/05 season as an assistant coach for the AHL farm team of his former club Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks , for which he had played the previous year . In the 2005/06 season the American was under contract with the New York Islanders from the National Hockey League as an assistant coach. In the summer of 2007, the former winger switched to the Pittsburgh Penguins franchise , for whose AHL farm team, the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins, he then worked as an assistant coach and head coach for a year. On February 15, 2009, Bylsma took over the post of dismissed head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins, which he led to the third Stanley Cup success since its inception at the end of the 2008/09 season .
In March 2011, his contract in Pittsburgh was extended by three years to the end of the 2013/14 season. When Jim Rutherford took over as the new general manager of the Penguins in June 2014 , Bylsma was fired. At the time, he was the coach with the highest win percentage in franchise history .
After a year off, he was introduced as the new coach of the Buffalo Sabers in May 2015 . He coached the Sabers for two seasons, in each of which he clearly missed the playoffs and was finally sacked in April 2017.
In June 2018, he was introduced as the new assistant coach at the Detroit Red Wings .
