Dylan Larkin (born July 30, 1996 in Waterford , Michigan ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League since May 2015 and plays for them on the position of the center . In the 2014 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected in the first round in 15th position.
Career
Larkin also played basketball, baseball, soccer and American football in his childhood, focusing on playing ice hockey by the age of 14. He was active for four years in the junior team Belle Tire in Detroit and won the national championship with it in 2011 before he was accepted into the USA Hockey National Team Development Program in 2012. In his second season there he was the second top scorer in his team behind Jack Eichel . In the NHL Entry Draft 2014 , the center was then selected in the first round in 15th position by his home team, the Detroit Red Wings .
In the same year Larkin moved to the University of Michigan and ran for the university team, the Wolverines , in the National Collegiate Athletic Association . Like his idol Steve Yzerman , he wore the number 19 on his back. In his debut season, Larkin was the second best scorer of his team and was named Rookie of the Year at the Big Ten Conference and voted into their First All-Star Team . After the end of the season, he signed a three-year entry contract with the Red Wings and initially moved to their farm team, the Grand Rapids Griffins , in the American Hockey League for six play-off games .
After a successful training camp, Larkin was able to establish himself as the first under-20-year-old since Mike Sillinger in 1990 in the Red Wings NHL squad at the beginning of the 2015/16 season . He scored his first NHL goal at the season opener against the Toronto Maple Leafs . In the first two months of the season, he scored 18 points in 24 games, making him NHL rookie of the month for November. A few weeks later he was nominated for the 2016 NHL All-Star Game , making him the first Red Wings rookie since Steve Yzerman to receive this honor.
Larkin finished the season with 23 goals and 22 assists, making him the Red Wings' top scorer of the season. For the 2017/18 season he significantly increased his statistics to 63 points from 82 games, making him the top scorer in Detroit for the first time. He then signed a new five-year contract with Red Wings in August 2018, which should earn him an average annual salary of $ 6.1 million.
International
Dylan Larkin first represented the United States at the 2013 World U-17 Hockey Challenge . In the following year he helped the national team to win the gold medal as assistant captain at the U18 Junior World Championship . At the U20 World Junior Championships in 2015, he and his team were eliminated in the quarter-finals, but with five goals from seven games he was still the most successful goalscorer of the tournament.
Then Larkin was appointed to the men's national team for the first time at the World Cup in the same year and won the bronze medal with this. As an 18-year-old, he was the second youngest player on his team. At the following World Cup in 2016 , he was also part of Team USA , which finished fourth, with Larkin and Auston Matthews becoming the team's top scorer (9). Another bronze medal followed at the 2018 World Cup .
