Cody Goloubef (born November 30, 1989 in Oakville , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League since February 2020 .
Career
Goloubef first played between 2005 and 2007 in the Ontario Provincial Junior Hockey League for the Milton Icehawks and Oakville Blades. In the summer of 2007, the defender joined the University of Wisconsin – Madison for the next three years and played for their ice hockey program in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association , a division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . During this time, Goloubef was selected in the second round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft in 37th place by the Columbus Blue Jackets .
The Blue Jackets signed the defender for three years in April 2010. First they put him in the 2010/11 season in their farm team , the Springfield Falcons , in the American Hockey League . In the following four game years, Goloubef was mainly active for the Falcons, but also repeatedly came to appearances in the NHL for the Blue Jackets, who had extended his contract in the summer months of 2013 and 2014 by one year. It was not until the 2015/16 season , when Columbus had tied him to the franchise for another two years , that Goloubef managed to establish himself in the NHL regular squad. However, after he was deported to the farm team again in the 2016/17 season , the Blue Jackets separated from him in November 2016 and transferred him to the Colorado Avalanche . In exchange, Columbus received Ryan Stanton . There Goloubef fulfilled his expiring contract until the end of the season and then received - after he had spent the summer as a free agent - a trial contract with the Buffalo Sabers . However, this engagement subsequently did not become a permanent contract, so Goloubef signed an AHL contract with the Stockton Heat in October 2017 . This was upgraded to a contract with the Calgary Flames , their NHL cooperation partner, in February 2018 . However, this was not extended after the 2017/18 season, so that he joined the Boston Bruins as a free agent in July 2018 .
The Bruins only used the defender in the AHL in Providence before he was transferred to the Ottawa Senators in January 2019 in exchange for Paul Carey . There he was regularly used in both AHL and NHL before he got to the Detroit Red Wings via the waiver in February 2020 .
International
Goloubef represented his home country at the U20 World Junior Championship in 2009 in the Canadian capital Ottawa . He won the gold medal with the team and was used in all six tournament games. He then made his debut for the senior national team of Canada at the Spengler Cup 2017 and won the trophy. He was also part of the Olympic squad of Team Canada , which - without competing with NHL players - won the bronze medal at the 2018 Winter Games .
